International Conference on Data Science and Applications (ICONDATA'19) (2. : 2019 : Balıkesir, Turkey)Big data analytics has been a subject for debate, discussions and arguments. However, the applicability and challenges of big data in terms of three views (i.e., data diagnosticity, data diversity and data governance) has been widely ignored. This paper provides a brief overview for data diagnosticity, data diversity and data governance in line with information value. In essence, this paper raises interesting and importance issues facing big data usage and concludes with a number of research questions that needs urgent attention.Büyük veri analizi, müzakere, fikir çatışma ve tartışmalara konu olmuştur. No sponso

    Get PDF
At the onset of 2020, Covid-19 pandemic began and disrupted teaching and learning activities with substantial implications for resources and operations. Against this backdrop, the configural causal effects of task-technology fit, technology-induced engagement and motivation, gender, and residential location on learning performance are examined. The proposed association was tested with a dyad sample of faculty members and students (n = 16) using fuzzy sets (fsQCA) analysis. Results show that (i) task-technology fit, and technology-induced motivation emerge as necessary conditions for high learning performance; (ii) task-technology fit, technology-induced engagement and motivation are sufficient conditions for high learning performance among female students, (iii) task-technology fit, technology-induced engagement and motivation are sufficient conditions for high learning performance among students living in urban areas and (iv) task-technology fit is a sufficient condition for high learning performance among female students living in rural areas irrespective of technology-induced engagement and motivation. Implications for theory and policy prescriptions are offered for practitioners. No sponso

Child Begging: Poverty and Misgovernance as a Causal Factor in Northern Nigeria

    Get PDF
Child-begging is a phenomenon that sends the school going age children on the street and begs for alms, as they attend a local Islamic (almjirii) school in most part of northern Nigeria. The menace of child-begging in has assumed an alarming rate. The institution of the state does not do much to curtail this menace. This study adopted a thematic approach, and data was collected at secondary sources. The findings of the study reveals that High rate of illiteracy, coupled with low family incomes stemming from unemployment and lack of good governance in Nigeria explains the reasons for this menace. The recently conceived new Model Islamic school system by the state where both Islamic and Western Education is taught and pupils kept in the school hostel is yet to take effect. Could this address the menace in northern Nigeria? This paper examines the two possible causative factors critically and recommends that the government should address the issue of poverty and unemployment while ensuring consistency in implementing the new policy as conceived, planned. Keywords: Child-Begging, Poverty, Misgovernance, Northern Nigeria, Almajiri. Almajirai

MAGNITUDE, VICISSITUDES AND REMEDIES OF URBAN POVERTY IN NORTH-EAST NIGERIA

    Get PDF
Nigeria is divided for political convenience, into six geo-political zones; The north east, in the last decade is in global media because of the ceaseless conflict and war-like situation between the Nigerian government and youth insurgents. The dictum of western education is “unlawful” was the agitation of the insurgents, and they seek to change the educational status quo. North East Nigeria is blessed with an arable land for agricultural activities and mineral resources. The inability and lack of the political will by the governments both at central and state governments to strategically invest in the growth of these sectors for development purposes, brought about many challenges for the north east geo-political zone. Greater percentages of the population within the north east are youths in their productive ages that were engaged in rural-urban drift in search for a better livelihood and economic comfort. This paper seeks to explore the magnitude, changes and solutions of urban poverty in north east Nigeria. The paper adopts a qualitative design to investigate the perceived economic deprivation, social challenges and political miscalculations by the state and their inability to plan for the economic well-being of its population. Data were sourced at secondary source and thematic analysis was employed for analysis. Urban poverty brought many untold hardships to the people in the north east states, Hitches arising from fast urbanization with rapid development of the cities in the North-East, are very apparent. Lack of ensuring satisfactory and steady establishment of the basic needed services such as housing, health care amenities, water, electricity etc are remains the greatest encounter. This will further incapacitate family’s social growth and economic progress unless income generating opportunities are created by policy makers and backed with a greater political will

Globalization has also increased the complexity and difficulty of addressing these issues and enhancing efficiency in FSCs. The adoption of blockchain technology (BCT) has been proven to have the potential to transform the FSC based on its potential benefits. BCT promises to improve FSC processes. However, little is known about the factors that drive blockchain adoption within the FSC and the impact of BCT supply chain processes, as empirical evidence is scarce within the existing literature. This study, therefore, explores key factors, impacts, and challenges of blockchain adoption in the FSC

Participation in decision-making and work outcomes: evidence from a developing economy

    Get PDF
Purpose – Although there is general agreement that employee participation in decision-making (PDM) has individual and organizational benefits, an important question remains about the possibility that it may also have certain individual and organizational costs as well. This article presents an “episodic process model” that accounts for both the bright and possible dark sides of participation. The model explains howPDMmight boost employee hope and self-efficacy, which in turn may lead to two distinct work outcomes–job satisfaction and behavior. Design/methodology/approach – In order to test the model, data (n 5 269) were collected from bank employees in two waves. A variance-based structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was utilized to analyze the data. Findings – Results from variance-based structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) show that employee PDM indeed exerts a positive impact on positive psychological resource capacities: hope, self-efficacy and job satisfaction. Hope, in turn, has a positive influence on job satisfaction and a negative influence on job-search behavior. Bias-corrected bootstrapping analysis demonstrated that the relationship between employee PDM and job satisfaction is mediated by hope. Originality/value – Insights for practitioners in a developing economy and possible areas of future research are highlighted. Keywords Employee participation, Decision making, Job satisfaction, Job search behavior, Hope, Self-efficacy.No sponso

The past three decades had witnessed increasing challenge to the higher education institutions especially the public-owned ones. This challenge had been for the institutions to think like the corporate enterprises towards becoming world class so as to ensure improved excellent performances. However, there had been little research on the impact of transformational leadership and knowledge management as well as the moderating role of entrepreneurial orientation on performance excellence of higher education institutions especially in Nigeria. Based on the Resource Based View and Complementary Asset Theory, this study thereby aimed to determine the significance of relationship between transformational leadership and organisational excellence, and the significance of relationship between knowledge management and organisational excellence in the public higher education institutions in Nigeria. The study further aimed to determine the moderating role of entrepreneurial orientation on the relationship between transformational leadership and organisational excellence, and on the relationship between knowledge management and organisational excellence. Data were collected from division heads in the public higher education institutions in the North-Central and South-Western geo-political zones of Nigeria. The study employed multistage sampling procedure with the use of survey questionnaires. Out of the 480 questionnaires distributed, 383 were returned with only 372 usable giving a 77.5 percent response rate. The 372 usable responses were analyzed through SPSS 20.0. Multiple regressions were used to investigate the relationships between transformational leadership, knowledge management, entrepreneurial orientation and organisational excellence. Results showed significant positive relationships between transformational leadership and organisational excellence and between knowledge management and organisational excellence. The results also showed that entrepreneurial orientation moderates the relationship between transformational leadership and organisational excellence, and that of knowledge management and organisational excellence

    Get PDF
This study focused on the effect of cognitive apprenticeship instructional method on the achievement of auto-mechanics students in Rivers State, Nigeria. A quasi-experimental pre-test design with an experimental and non-equivalent control group was adopted. The population of the study comprised all the 212 second-year auto-mechanics students of the four technical colleges in Rivers State, no sampling was carried out as the entire population of the students was used. Three instruments were used for data collection. These were cognitive apprenticeship instructional lesson plans, which served as the treatment, traditional lesson plans, and an auto-mechanics achievement test. Five research questions and five hypotheses were formulated, mean and standard deviation was used to analyse the data for answering the research questions while analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to test the hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance. The study found that the students taught with cognitive apprenticeship instructional method tended to have higher mean post-test scores in the auto-mechanics achievement test than those taught with the conventional lecture method. Based on this, it was recommended that auto-mechanics teachers should always adopt cognitive apprenticeship instructional components, namely: modelling, scaffolding, coaching, articulation and exploration. This will enable them to cater for the diverse learning styles of the students
